Budget lets Tas motorists down

There were winners and losers in the recent federal May budget and Royal Automobile Club of Tasmania (RACT) claims Tasmania lost.

The federal government had already put money aside for the Hobart Airport roundabout, Midland Highway upgrades and better freight rail. However, the RACT put forward three new budget submissions:

  • $15 million to improve Bass Highway intersections at Wynyard
  • $300 million to improve traffic flow and capacity on eastern approach to Hobart CBD
  • $600 million to replace Bridgewater Bridge.

The May budget left these projects unfunded. Some claimed this was because there were not enough votes riding on them.

RACT had also asked the federal government to continue to fund Keys2drive. This is a program that gives tens of thousands of free driving lessons to L-platers and their supervisors. This is an Australia-wide program and it scored a further $16 million in this Budget.
