Review of Lifetime Support and CTP schemes in SA

The South Australian government is reviewing the Lifetime Support Scheme (LSS) and 2013 reforms to the CTP scheme. First of all, the reviewing committee invited submissions from interested parties by 27 April 2017.

The LSS

The SA LSS started up in July 2014 to provide treatment, care and support to anyone seriously injured in a road accident, regardless of fault. All vehicle registrations include a levy for the Lifetime Support Authority that runs this scheme. Currently, the Law Society says there are 93 people in this scheme, 12 of them for life.

The review committee will examine whether:

  • The LSS is “effective and fair” for people catastrophically injured in road accidents
  • The scheme should extend to people catastrophically injured in other circumstances
  • Someone with multiple injuries receives reasonable compensation
  • These reforms changed the way people claim compensation so premiums increased, or could do so.
